EMILIO ESTEVEZ ‘WHY I DROPPED OFF THE RADAR’

THE ACTOR DISCUSSES RETURNING TO THE ICE IN THE MIGHTY DUCKS: GAME CHANGERS

-

He shot to fame as a member of the Brat Pack, alongside fellow A-listers Rob Lowe, Demi Moore and Molly Ringwald. But Emilio Estevez admits he “dropped off the radar” almost as quickly as he found the spotlight, after he chose a career behind the camera.

“I’ve spent the last 25 years directing films and, to a lot of people, it had seemed like I had dropped off the radar and

I wasn’t interested in acting anymore,” he says. “The fact of the matter of it is, I made a left turn. I exited mainstream motion pictures with The Mighty Ducks 3.”

Fast forward many years and 58-year-old Emilio is ready to take centrestage again, and is reprising his famous role as hockey coach Gordon Bombay in the Disney+ reboot The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers.

“It’s interesting to come back now using The Mighty Ducks

as a re-entry vehicle,” Emilio confirms. When the show’s executive producer, Steve Bill, asked Emilio if he would be interested in coming back for the show, he leapt at the chance – but only on one condition.

“I said: ‘Well sure, if we can capture the magic of the franchise. If we can create a cinematic experience and not just try to sort of cash in on the nostalgia aspect of it.’ And I think that’s ultimately what we’ve done,” Emilio reveals.

The 10-part reboot follows 12-year-old Evan (Brady Noon), who fail to make the cut for the now-powerhouse Mighty Ducks junior ice hockey team. His mum, Alex (played by Gilmore Girls star, Lauren Graham) helps him form a new team of underdogs, alongside the Mighty Duck’s former coach, Gordon Bombay.
