Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and his wife Melinda shocked the world last week when they announced they had split after 27 years of marriage!

“After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage,” a statement read.

The couple met back in 1987 while they were both working at Microsoft and share three children together: Jennifer, 25, Rory, 21, and Phoebe, 18.

While little is currently known about how the pair will divide their assets, the separation could soon become messy, with Bill’s estimated net worth of $168 billion at stake.

Prior to the news, the couple resided in Washington, which is one of nine US states where residents can receive a 50/50 split of marital assets.

That means Melinda could end up with a settlement of a whopping $84 billion, which would make it the most expensive divorce of all time.

Interestingly, the couple reportedly did not have a prenuptial agreement prior to filing for divorce, but they do have a contract that stipulates how they will split their property when they separate – details of which are not yet public.
