From Jack the Ripper to the Zodiac Killer, unsolved murder cases have long captured the public’s imagination worldwide. Every week, it seems a new true crime documentary series is released or fresh details of a long-forgotten murder emerge.

But behind those intriguing and alluring stories and headlines is the unfathomable heartache endured by the families of those victims. For them, a lifetime of pain follows the horrific violence their loved ones endured.

In Australia, many murders are still unsolved and thousands of people remain missing long-term. While it might seem there is nothing any of us can do to help, that isn’t true. One small piece of information is enough to blow a whole case open and give much-needed closure to a grieving family.

That is why New Idea is launching the campaign Cold Case Crusade: Help Us Find Answers.

According to Peter Price, director of Crime Stoppers Australia, the public’s involvement is immeasurable.

Last year alone, Crime Stoppers collected a staggering 236,000 calls and made 6500 arrests. Of those 6500 arrests, 18,500 charges were laid.

“It can take just a slip of the tongue in one instance, and that is all we need to catch a criminal,” he says.

Over the next three weeks, New

Idea will be speaking with families of victims of unsolved crimes, and calling on everyday Australians to think about what information they might have that could help give answers to those who need it most.
