WHEN NICOLE MET LUCY ANOTHER OSCAR... OR ANOTHER BOMB?!

When news of Nicole Kidman being cast as Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos was announced, you’d have thought Lucifer himself came boiling up from hell in a pool of red-hot lava: fans were not amused! A lot of folks felt if a biopic about Lucy were made, Will & Grace star Debra Messing (who lobbied for the role) would be cast. But Debra isn’t a SUPERSTAR, now is she?

You have to admit, it takes a lot of guts to portray one of the most beloved women EVER. It’s sort of like climbing Mount Everest with a harness, actually.

Oh my, Nicole – what have you done?

Our Nic is undeniably on a career hot streak right now, with hits like Lion, Big Little Lies, The Undoing and Nine Perfect Strangers. But don’t forget, it wasn’t that long ago she’d been labelled ‘box-office poison’ after back-to-back dogs like

The Stepford Wives, Bewitched

and even Australia.

So will Nic’s greatest gamble pay off? Let’s do the maths and see if this equation adds up.

Nicole is 100 per cent one of her generation’s greatest chameleons, immersing herself in the character. In fact, her hair transformations alone fill up an entire Google Images search library (type in ‘Nicole Kidman wigs’ and see what I mean!). So Lucy’s technicolor hennaed hairdo won’t be an issue.

On the other hand, Being the Ricardos is a warts-and-all look into the rocky marriage of Lucille and husband Desi Arnaz. While nobody does ‘tortured’ better than Nicole, dare I say, she isn’t exactly known for her comedic skills. Lucy was the queen of slapstick and over-the-top mugging – a broad that wasn’t afraid of being a fool. It doesn’t exactly scream ‘NICOLE’, does it?

And the fact that last week’s first-look trailer barely showed Nicole’s face as Lucille, has the haters proclaiming she’s gonna bomb big time. Still, my fingers are crossed she succeeds. As much as we love Lucy, we (secretly) love Nicole more!
