CAPES! SAVED BY A SKETCH
In June 2002, 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart was taken from her home in Salt Lake City, Utah, and held captive by street preacher Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee, until her rescue nine months later. Mitchell believed he had to abduct girls until he had 350 wives. In October 2002, Elizabeth’s sister, Mary Katherine, suddenly remembered she had heard the voice of her sister’s kidnapper, who had worked as a handyman in their home. A police sketch was distributed a few months later and, in 2003, a woman called police and reported him. Elizabeth was rescued and reunited with her parents. Mitchell was jailed for life.
