JACQUI LAMBIE

‘OUR PRIORITY IS ON THE KIDS’

-

If anybody can talk to the community spirit and resilience of Tasmania, it’s Senator Jacqui Lambie, who grew up in Devonport. Speaking to locals over the past week, Jacqui tells New Idea there’s still very much a sombre feeling in the air.

“Tears were rolling down faces as I stopped by surrounding towns,” she explains, insisting “this has been one of the biggest tragedies we’ve ever faced”.

While Jacqui admits there are lots of arms around those in need, she doesn’t hesitate to offer her personal support.

“I encourage those in need to seek help, if there’s anybody who wants to contact me, I’m making that possible,” she says. “I’m just like every other Tassie right now – we all feel a bit useless, so we’re letting people know we’re here and can help.”

A week on from the accident, Jacqui insists there’s “no blame game going on at the moment”, instead she wants to focus on helping the families and young kids who will return to school next year without their friends.

“The priority is on the kids, it’s also on that first day back next year – that’s going to be tough.”

Jacqui says it’s crucial right now to rally around the first responders, and young kids who witnessed the horrific scenes.

“My thoughts are with them all. There’s not much we can say, so I offer all my support.”
