THE PCOS DIET

Around eight to 13 per cent of Australian women of reproductive age have PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), causing a range of potential symptoms including fertility issues, insulin resistance and difficulty with losing weight. However, there is research that suggests changing your diet may be beneficial. Essentially, the PCOS diet is about incorporating foods from the low GI diet, the DASH diet and including lots of antiinflammatory foods, such as berries, fish and leafy greens.

THE MIND DIET

Short for Mediterranean dash Intervention for N euro degenerative Delay, this diet is based on research that changing your eating habits can reduce risk of developing forms of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease. Followers are advised to eat wholegrains, fish, olive oil, nuts, leafy greens, beans and berries, plus enjoy a daily glass of wine! Fried food, red meat, cheese, pastries and sweets are to be avoided.

DASH DIET

Short for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, the DASH diet was created to treat high blood pressure and lower the risk of heart disease. However, many followers find they will shed a few kilos, too. As you might expect, the diet is low in salt, but includes plenty of wholegrains, vegies and fruit, along with lean protein, nuts, legumes and low-fat dairy.

LOW GI DIET

First designed for people with diabetes, the low GI diet has become a popular approach for losing weight. It’s based on the glycaemic index – which is how long our bodies take to break down carbohydrates for energy. The key is to avoid high GI foods (white bread, jasmine rice and instant noodles), which will make energy levels spike and then crash. Instead, stick to low GI foods (wholegrain bread, basmati rice and yoghurt) to sustain energy levels, so you feel full for longer.
