SHOCK DECISION

THE WOMEN’S WORLD NUMBER ONE IS STEPPING BACK FROM TENNIS

-

After her incredible victory at the 2022 Australian Open, Ash Barty has stunned the tennis world by pulling out of two upcoming tennis tournaments: the Miami Open, where she’s currently the two-time reigning champion, and Indian Wells.

In a statement, the world number one admitted her “body has not recovered” since winning the Australian Open.

“I love these events and am sad not to be there competing, but getting my body right must be my focus,” Ash, 25, revealed.

“I don’t believe I am at the level necessary to win these events and as a result I have decided to withdraw from both tournaments,” she continued.

Ash has won the past two Miami Opens, her successful title defence last year sparking a golden run in which she added the Wimbledon crown to her grand slam collection before becoming the first homegrown athlete to win the Australian Open in 44 years in January.

Ash’s decision comes on the back of her recent admissions that being hyperfocused on her career in recent times has taken a toll on the time she spends with family, including with fiancé, Garry Kissick.
