Hot cross buns, chocolate eggs and long, lazy Sunday lunches – Easter is a time when most of us want to enjoy spending time with family rather than keeping track of what we’re eating.

However, if you’re looking to avoid the all-too-familiar sugar crash, there are a few smart choices you can make to ensure you’ll finish the holidays feeling as good as when you started. The best part? There’s no need to miss out on your favourite foods.

Dr Sam Hay reveals his tips for a happy and healthy Easter!

START THE DAY RIGHT

Before you dive straight into Easter eats, it’s a good idea to start the day with a wholesome balanced brekkie.

“To mix things up, enjoy a different breakfast from what you normally would have on a working day,” Dr Hay recommends. “Make sure the breakfast is rich in protein, fibre and energy, so you aren’t reaching for the chocolate an hour later.”

STEP OUTSIDE

Chances are you won’t feel like going for a jog on Easter Sunday, but Dr Hay does recommend enjoying some time outside in the sunshine and fresh air.

“Call your friends or family and organise a walk, barbecue lunch or a swim at a local pool or beaches,” he suggests. “Your body will thank you for getting outside and moving.”

MAKE YOUR OWN EASTER EGGS

“For those not keen on chocolate, get crafty in the kitchen by making your very own protein Easter egg bliss balls,” Dr Hay says.

“There are loads of tasty recipes online to keep you busy and satisfied.”

JUST ADD VEGIES

“Invite the family round for a home-cooked meal to show off your skills in the kitchen,” advises Dr Hay. “If you’re looking for some inspiratio­n, Australian mushrooms – aka the mighty mushie – are jampacked with nutrients and can be added to most dishes.”

PLAN AN EASTER EGG HUNT

An active Easter egg hunt or games day can be a great way to get you and the family moving.

“Australia has lots of outdoor sports to get involved with, including tennis and basketball courts, and volleyball nets,” says Dr Hay. “When packing for the day, don’t forget to stash a bottle of water in your bag to keep you hydrated all day long.”
