If you haven’t heard already, more workers than ever are opting out of their current jobs. Recent research by Microsoft revealed that more than 40 per cent of the global workforce are considering leaving their employers. According to career coach Amie Duignan, this movement – aka the Great Resignation – is making waves through Australia as more people are swapping out jobs that drain them for careers that light them up.
The Great Resignation is happening because our world was tipped upside down in 2020 due to the pandemic, with the job market full of redundancies and no-one hiring.
“While challenging, our new state of being left us with more time to think about what we want from life,” says Amie. “For many, that included asking questions around our jobs and the big question: ‘Am I actually happy?’”
As the market started to pick back up, it gave candidates hope as they started to feel like it was safe to explore other options.
“Their reflection time in isolation allowed them to realise what they truly wanted from their careers,” explains Amie. “[This] tied with the confidence and security to know now it is safe to look around at other roles started the Great Resignation.”
