3 THINGS TO AVOID SAYING TO SOMEONE GRIEVING

HERE’S HOW TO SUPPORT A LOVED ONE IN MOURNING

-

DON’T SAY: ‘LET ME KNOW IF THERE’S ANYTHING I CAN DO FOR YOU’

It’s a nice gesture, but your loved one shouldn’t have to reach out for help. Instead, offer specific support for them such as cooking meals, looking after pets, or helping to organise the funeral.

DON’T SAY: ‘IT HAPPENS TO US ALL’

It’s true, loss is a part of life and we all lose grandparents and parents. But for the bereaved, this line might minimise the loss they are feeling. Instead, focus on the person that is grieving by saying, ‘You must really miss them.’

DON’T SAY: NOTHING AT ALL

Sometimes it’s hard to know what to say to a close friend who is grieving, but the worst thing you can do is not say anything at all. If unsure, a good place to begin is sharing a memory of their loved one to allow them to reminisce.
