NATURAL SOOTHERS
Naturopath Karina Francois says a cough is the body’s way of trying to eliminate infection. Here are her suggestions for easing the irritation with common ingredients.
MANUKA HONEY
“It’s expensive but worth it because it has antiviral and antibacterial properties, and is very soothing.”
GARLIC
“Grate raw garlic onto a salad or into a soup. It’s an inflammatory and antibacterial, so aim for one to two cloves a day to help ward off coughs.”
SALT WATER
“Mix salt and water for a gargle that works like an expectorant – the salt attaches to the mucus and helps you to cough it out with less irritation.”
THYME AND LIQUORICE ROOT
“These are natural decongestants to brew as tea for helping to clear and soothe a cough. Gently steep the herb in water, remove and sip when cool enough.”
COCONUT OIL
“Coconut oil in warm water will sooth a cough while boosting your immune system to fight infection.”
