Not many people could understand everything Britney Spears has gone through in the public eye quite like Sir Elton John.
Even though they became pop icons decades apart, the pairs tumultuous trajectories to fame reveal startling parallels – making their new collaboration all the more poignant.
Sources tell New Idea that Elton, 75, has become “a much-needed close friend and confidant” to the mum of two since recording their hit song ‘Hold Me Closer’ in July.
The single is a reimagined version of his classic ‘Tiny Dancer’, which rocketed to the top of the charts around the world back in 1971.
Their joint success comes after Britney finally succeeded in breaking her eight-year conservatorship held by her estranged father, Jamie, and marrying her long time partner Sam Asghari.
But just as the ‘Oops!… I Did It Again’ singer, 40, readjusts to having her independence, she’s become embroiled in another spat over her sons Sean, 16, and Jayden, 15, with ex Kevin Federline, and recently revealed that she’d suffered a miscarriage.
“Elton couldn’t have come along at a more perfect time for Britney,” says a long-time friend.
“She needs a father figure in her life and since Elton’s become a dad, he’s even more compassionate about her situation. He gave her full control in the studio [on their new song] and it liberated her – she’ll never forget it.”
Friends say this is just the beginning for Britney, with Elton keen for them to hit the stage together for a duet the next time he holds a concert.
“Elton’s taken her under his wing – he sees so much of himself in her, as a pop star who also went through the wringer in his career,” adds the friend.
“They have a lot in common, from their intense family situations, growing up with very little, addiction problems and getting ripped off every step of the way by more powerful people in Hollywood.”
When it comes with dealing with a troubled past, Elton has the perfect solution for Britney finally putting it behind her.
“He’s suggested Britney might like to get her feelings out about the people who wronged her, just like he did through his film Rocketman,” explains the source.
Their friendship is a change of tune after Elton made a snipe about Brit being “too flawless” live on stage in 2012.
“He called her to apologise and she was so ‘Southern sweet’ he melted,” says the source. “They’ve had each other’s back ever since.”
