f you have lavished money and attention on your hobby — whether it is classic cars or motorbikes — you’ll want to ensure they’re stored in a garage or workshop reflective of the effort you have put into them. But one area that is often overlooked in garaging is flooring.

“Most garage and workshop floors are concrete,” says Hylton Jones of Coating Technologies Ltd, “and the very nature of garages, workshops, and classic cars means that spills do happen. Concrete gets dirty very easily, and what a lot of people don’t realize is that it retains a lot of dust, too. It’s not the best surface to store, or work on, your classic car or motorbike.”

Coating Technologies’ Cotec Tuff Floor WB Epoxy is a water-based thin-film epoxy flooring, which has recently undergone significant development to produce a tough, durable, and chemically resistant finish — that means no more stains.

“Most other epoxy flooring solutions are solvent based, but Tuff Floor WB Epoxy is water based, meaning you don’t get the nasty smell or effects,” Hylton says, “and being waterborne, it’s also extremely easy to apply for the DIYER, and is available in a range of colours, with a colour-matching option also available.”

He adds that “Tuff Floor WB Epoxy is applied over correctly prepared concrete that has either been lightly ground using a diamond grinder, or acid etched. Acid etching is easy, as we have a powdered acid that is simply dissolved in water and applied to the surface with a broom. Once it has stopped ‘fizzing’, the floor is hosed off and allowed to dry.” Hylton has a word of advice, too — “Since concrete floors are all different, if you have any doubt, or would like a better understanding of what’s required, it’s easy to call us for advice.”
