SUPER CHEVY SUNDAY NO. 9

When I spoke to Glenn Wood, the organizer of this year’s Super Chevy Sunday a few days before the event, he said, “It’s hard to image that it is nine years since I ran the first one.”

Super Chevy Sunday, run by the Wellington Chevrolet Club Inc., has grown into an established annual event on the Greater Wellington region’s early year car show calendar. This year’s show took place on Sunday, 9 March, at Upper Hutt’s Harcourt Park, on a sunny and warm early autumn day that was ideal for chilling out and looking at classic cars. Visitors say that they like this show best of those in the Hutt Valley for its two-level concourse, the atmosphere in the grounds, and because they always see something they have not seen before. Around 130 cars had parked up by 11.30am, and I didn’t see an English car among them — something confirmed by Glenn Wood when we chatted on the concourse. A 1952 Canadian-built Chevrolet Deluxe took home the Best Chev award, a 1961 Ford Starliner won Best Ford, and a 1958 Volkswagen Beetle was the show’s Best Other. As is the tradition with this show, proceeds from the day went to the Wellington Free Ambulance to help keep this invaluable service free.

Next year, when Super Chevy Sunday turns 10, a commemorative car run through the Hutt Valley will take place as part of the annual show. This is something for classic car enthusiasts to diarize now. I’m already looking forward to being there.
