Colour of royalty, magic and mystery

Purple — in its many shades and hues — is the new ‘it’ colour for winter 2019. Purple’s rarity in nature and the expense of creating the colour has linked it to royalty and given it a supernatural aura for centuries.

Legend has it that in Roman times rulers Julius Caesar and Augustus both decreed that only the Emperor could wear purple.

When Nero became emperor, the wearing of purple and even the sale of purple was punishable by death.

Taking all aspects of purple’s past and present into consideration, purple symbolises magic, mystery, spirituality, the sub-conscious, creativity, dignity, royalty — and it evokes all of these meanings more so than any other colour.

Variations of purple convey different meanings: Light purples are light-hearted, floral, and romantic.

The dark shades are more intellectual and dignified. What shade do you prefer?

Purple is the hot colour trend for winter 2019.
