AFTER almost 50 years of breeding, it’s no surprise the Binnie family know a thing or two about Poll Dorsets.
Each year, the stud turns off some of the best rams in the country – and the 2018 sale will be no different.
Held later this month, on September 27, the Coledale Poll Dorset stud team have been busy preparing, having shorn all sale stock last month.
Since then, they have been on a ration of hammer milled oaten hay, with lu- pins and wheat for protein; and are now looking every inch the quality animal.
The lead sire of this year’s sale rams is Coledale 44/15 – who has bred very well for the past two years at Coledale, and has provided great hind quarters and body shape in all his offspring.
This year’s Coledale sale will also see the first lot of Rangeview 43/15 progeny go under the hammer – young rams who all display excellent carcase, great length and depth with clean points.
Kurralea 740/14 has also produced quality big sons, and is another featured sire at the 2018 sale.
“This year, we have a really quality line up,” stud principal Wallace Binnie said.
“I am sure there are several rams that would suit the most discerning stud buyer looking for a sire this year.”
Over the last 12 months, Coledale has used semen from the top ram on Lambplan, Aberdeen 527/16 - the number one trait leader in carcase + and growth under Lambplan.
“We selected him also for correct structure, clean head and points, and he is in the top bracket for his eating quality index,” Mr Binnie said.
“We also purchased semen from Bruan 81/14, who is also a very well-balanced ram with Lambplan indexes to match – these are the kind of quality animals that we incorporate into our genetic base.”
Like many across the country, it has not been an easy season for the Coledale Poll Dorset team.
There has been little rain, little ground cover and a resulting rise in early weaning rates.
Despite the hard conditions, it has also been an opportunity for the Poll Dorsets to shine.
“The breed has the ability to turn off sucker lambs at four months of age, or to carry them through if the season permits to produce those extra heavy weights at 10 – 12 months of age,” Mr Binnie said. “Not many can do that.” The 2018 Coledale Poll Dorset Stud Ram Sale will be held on the last Thursday in September, on the 27th – just before the AFL grand final.
Rams will be penned by 11am, with a barbecue lunch kicking off at 12 noon followed by the sale at 1pm.
