Dressing A Bed

Bedrooms are the perfect candidate for the layering of fabrics and the texture of these fabrics.

Begin with the bed itself; a linen slip cover or buttoned upholstered bed head, the warmth of natural timber or woven leather; the bedroom furniture selection will look towards mimicking the style carried through from elsewhere in the property; traditional sophistication, polished luxe, relaxed and earthy or edgy alternate from there layer in the large square European pillows in the back; they create proportion and scale. Then in front layer two sets (or four pillows) of standard size; one set to match the sheets (which will become sleeping pillows) and a second set of two pillows that coordinate with the quilt cover (decorative pillows). If we visually divide the bed in half length-wise position one side of the bed with the two standard pillow lying flat; one on top of the other, on the other side, standing both standard pillows upright facing forward, thereby creating height variation, diversity and emphasising the push and pull of light and dark when applying a light coloured quilt cover and darker sheet colour or visa-versa.

Cushions. How many? And where to place them.

Assemble either symmetrically with the same cushion repeated on both sides in a centred straight line from the pillows behind, or alternatively asymmetrically; two contrasting cushions grouped in the centre of the bed and overlapping. For additional colour and contrast a large cushion can also be placed in the back between one European pillow and the first line of standard pillows. A bedspread folded into thirds or throw rug gathered and running across the width of the bed to meet the quilt cover which has been concertina folded introduces another level of visual complexity and additional texture.

Space permitting at the end of the bed; consider a long upholstered ottoman or timber bench seat to finish the look.
