An­nual dragon boat re­gatta

THE Brave Hearts Dragon Boat Club will host the 8th An­nual Al­bury Wodonga Dragon Boat Re­gatta on the last week­end of Fe­bru­ary next year at the Gate­way Lakes Precinct, Lemke Road, Wodonga.

This re­gatta will also cel­e­brate an im­por­tant 10 year birth­day mile­stone.

This be­ing the launch of the beau­ti­ful Brave Hearts Dragon Boat, built by a re­mark­able lo­cal group of can­cer sur­vivors who cap­tured the hearts of the re­gion by be­com­ing the first group of women to have ever built a 12 me­tre dragon boat at the TAFE NSW Rive­rina In­sti­tute, Al­bury Cam­pus.

This also saw the com­mence­ment of this great sport to our re­gion.

The much loved Com­mu­nity Day Re­gatta which will take place on Satur­day Fe­bru­ary 27, 2016 will have an un­der­ly­ing theme of Get Ac­tive for Your Health, and in the process have fun.

The event aims to have over 20 cor­po­rate and com­mu­nity teams in­clud­ing both coun­cils com­pet­ing against each other in the true spirit of healthy competition and ca­ma­raderie. They wel­come new­com­ers to this day. A team con­sists of 20 peo­ple who will be pro­vided with ev­ery­thing in­clud­ing life jack­ets, pad­dles and of course a dragon boat to pad­dle and a qual­i­fied Sweep to steer the boat.

Each team will be given 2 one hour coach­ing tu­ition ses­sions on the two week­ends prior to the re­gatta.

As well as a great day of sport­ing fun there will be a spe­cial, touch­ing re­mem­brance cer­e­mony on the wa­ter to com­mem­o­rate and cel­e­brate the lives of those who have lost theirs to can­cer, as well as in­di­vid­u­als who are hav­ing can­cer treat­ments or are now in re­mis­sion.

An­other high­light of this day will in­clude Dragon Boat Sport­ing Clubs par­tic­i­pat­ing in the ex­cit­ing and skill fo­cused ‘two kilo­me­tre turn’ race show­ing their skills and en­durance.

The Dragon Boat Sport­ing Clubs re­gatta will take place the fol­low­ing day on Sun­day, Fe­bru­ary 28 with the Dragon Boat Clubs from all over Vic­to­ria and south­ern NSW com­pet­ing against our lo­cal Brave Hearts and War­riors teams.

This re­gatta is part of the Dragon Boats Vic­to­ria Competition (www.drag­onboatvic­to­ ).
