Monichino Wines hon­our the past, look to the fu­ture

THE sec­ond half of 2015 was a time of highs and lows for Monichino Wines.

Late Au­gust saw the pass­ing of beloved win­ery pa­tri­arch Carlo Monichino, who es­tab­lished Monichino Wines at the Katunga Vine­yard in 1962.

Through hard work and ded­i­ca­tion, Carlo and wife Mar­garet es­tab­lished the vine­yard and opened the cel­lar door in 1972, and in the years that fol­lowed, he con­tin­ued to grow new va­ri­eties and in­no­vate.

His legacy will con­tinue to live on, with his son Terry mak­ing wine in his own right, daugh­ter Anna op­er­at­ing the win­ery and over­see­ing marketing and sales, and the win­ery now pro­duc­ing 27 va­ri­eties of wine bear­ing the Monichino name.

These va­ri­eties in­clude Ital­ian va­ri­eties, for­ti­fied wines, and much more to cater for every palate.

The Dookie Wine Show, held last Septem­ber, saw the 2012 Monichino chardon­nay win best in its class, the fourth time in a row the va­ri­ety had achieved that feat.

The chardon­nay is de­scribed as a full bod­ied, rich and en­tic­ing chardon­nay, boast­ing lush Amer­i­can oak and vanilla aro­mas with burnt honey, melon and peach flavours on the palate.

Re­cent months also saw the open­ing of the new Café Tra­mon­tino at Cel­lar Door.

Boast­ing a modern Euro­pean menu created from lo­cal ingredients, the café is run by ex­ec­u­tive chef Ryan Gib­son, who has lived and worked in France and Europe, as well as in the Goul­burn Val­ley.

The com­ing months see some en­tic­ing events be­ing held at Monichino Wines.

A Far­m­gate to Plate de­gus­ta­tion dinner will be held on Satur­day, March 12, with the win­ery work­ing in con­junc­tion with Moira Shire and the Mel­bourne Food and Wine Fes­ti­val to show­case a mag­nif­i­cent menu with match­ing pre­mium Monichino Wines.

Monichino Wines cel­lar door, lo­cated at Ber­rys Road, Katunga, is open for tast­ings from 9am- 5pm Mon­day-Fri­day, and 10am-5pm Satur­daySun­day.

Café Tra­mon­tino on­site is open from 11.30am3pm from Wed­nes­day-Sun­day.
