BEING THE CHANGE: LIVE WELL AND SPARK A CLIMATE REVOLUTION

North & South - - Review -

PETER KALMUS (NEWSOUTH BOOKS, $47.99) If you’re keen to reduce your personal impact on a warming world, this is a worthwhile read. Californian climate scientist Peter Kalmus demonstrates it’s possible to substantially reduce fossil fuel use and, although it means change, a low-emissions life can be more rewarding. He gives clear information and ideas on transport, travel, energy, food and consumer goods, as well more challenging directions, such as composting your own “humanure”, and “dumpster diving” for supermarket discards. I’ll skip those for now – but I like that Kalmus doesn’t shy away from the uncomfortable. For example, “hour for hour, the quickest way a normal human can warm the planet is by flying on a commercial plane”.
