Since 1987, a posses of in­ter­na­tional tal­ent has de­scended on the Far North for the bi­en­nial Kerik­eri In­ter­na­tional Pi­ano Com­pe­ti­tion (26-30 Septem­ber), held in a 400-seat au­di­to­rium. Fif­teen se­lected con­tes­tants from Korea, China, Ja­pan, Aus­tralia, Is­rael, the US and New Zealand (rep­re­sented by Auck­lan­der Del­van Lin) will per­form at the Turner Cen­tre in Kerik­eri. Tune into more “clas­sics” with the New Zealand Sym­phony Orches­tra’s Clas­si­cal Hits se­ries (tour­ing na­tion­wide, 6-22 Septem­ber). Led by as­so­ciate con­duc­tor Hamish Mck­e­ich, the fam­ily-friendly col­lec­tion in­cludes Schu­bert’s “Un­fin­ished” Sym­phony, Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fan­tasy Over­ture and the pre­miere of Gil­lian White­head’s Tu­ranga-nui.
