Novem­ber 19, 1988:

• Joe Chat­field at­tends a con­cert at the Univer­sity of Auck­land where “in­dus­trial/ ex­per­i­men­tal” bands Tin­ni­tus and Min­istry of Com­pul­sory Joy are play­ing. She walks off alone to­wards Sy­monds St about mid­night and is never seen again.

April 25, 1989:

• A re­con­struc­tion of her dis­ap­pear­ance fea­tures on TVNZ’S Crime­watch pro­gramme, prompt­ing a num­ber of new sight­ings. How­ever, they come to noth­ing and po­lice think some peo­ple have con­fused Chat­field with her friends or the ac­tor who played her.


• Po­lice re­open the in­quiry, as­sign­ing up to six de­tec­tives to the case. They in­ter­view Chat­field’s friends and ac­quain­tances, and try to track down as many peo­ple as pos­si­ble who were at the con­cert. As a re­sult, they speak to a wo­man who dis­closes she was ab­ducted and raped the same night.

Novem­ber 2007:

• Po­lice of­fer a $50,000 re­ward for in­for­ma­tion lead­ing to Chat­field’s where­abouts. It is never claimed.
