OUR APPRENT ICE says…
Because the sun was quite high by the time we took this shot of Dunstanburgh Castle, the light was very direct. There was nothing we could do to make the castle more dramatic, but the waves were pounding the coastline, so we decided to use this to add drama to the shot. To get a slow enough shutter speed to blur the water, I attached my variable ND filter, which enabled me to vary how much light was reaching the sensor. We experimented with various shutter speeds, but this shot, taken at 1.3 seconds, provided the perfect compromise between blurring the waves and capturing their movement.
