If I buy the new Nikon AF-P 70-300mm f/4.55.6E ED VR lens, which of its functions won’t work on my D600 body?

Jason says... It’s a first-class lens, which we rated very highly in last month’s Big Test of telephoto zooms. That being said, it does have compatibility issues with older Nikon cameras on two counts, with a ‘Pulse’ stepping motor autofocus system and an electromagnetically controlled diaphragm. The compatibility list is slightly different to that of Nikon’s DX format AF-P and E-type lenses – it’s always good to check these things when you can.

The good news is that your D600, and most other recent cameras, have full compatibility with the FX format AF-P 70-300mm lens, although all but the newest models might require a firmware update. Older D3-series, D300-series, D700, D5200 and D7000 cameras are also compatible, except that the focus position will be lost after a period of inactivity, if the metering system goes into standby mode. The lens is completely incompatible with D1-series, D2-series, D40-series, D50, D60, D70-series, D80, D90, D100, D200, D3000-D3200 and D5000-D5100 cameras.
