Five things to look out for

As with many camera accessories, it’s best to do your homework

-

Wired or wireless?

If you don’t need wireless range, a wired remote will give an uninterruptible connection and needn’t sacrifice features.

Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi triggers harness the power of your smart device for comprehensive remote camera control, but establishing an initial connection can be a faff.

Extra features

Remotely triggering is just the start. In addition to time-lapse features, some remotes also pack auto bracketing, HDR, and focus-stacking modes.

Cable concerns

Even wireless remotes will have a receiver that plugs in. Some include a selection of sync cables to suit multiple brands, other remotes may be Nikon-specific models.

DIY hacks

Forget to pack your remote? Use your Nikon’s self timer and activate exposure delay mode to camera shake. Some newer Nikons even include a built-in intervalometer for time-lapses.
