What is a tripod collar?

Telephoto lenses tend to be big and heavy, so placing your camera on a tripod with a big telephoto on the end can be unbalanced and in danger of toppling forward. So many telephoto lenses come with a tripod collar; you mount the lens on the tripod, not the camera, to place the centre of gravity over the tripod for a better-balanced setup.
