Lens distortion

Lenses generally suffer from two types of distortion – barrel and pincushion – which occur at opposite ends of the focal length range. Barrel distortion occurs at wide focal lengths. Here, the central portion of the image bulges out compared to the top and bottom of the frame. Pincushion distortion takes place at telephoto lengths, with the

central area of the image being ‘pinched in’.
