Expert insight Talk to your subject

In portrait photography you’ve got to be talking to people the whole time so that you ‘own’ the contact with your model. It’s hard to do this on any given day, but even more so for Jodie, who was learning the ropes, so I gave her some time alone with Bryony so that she could own the shooting space, rather than feeling like she’s being watched! As soon as I did, I could hear them chatting and laughing, and Jodie came away with some brilliant portraits.
