Our Apprentice says…

It was time to put what I’d learnt throughout the day into practice. I zoomed to 135mm on my 70-300mm lens so that I could force a shallow depth of field at f/4.5. I shot this image at ISO1600 and Paul was right; it wasn’t too noisy, the D3100 handled it well. I focused on Bryony’s eyes and decided to keep her face clear, but obscure some of her body with pretty purple flowers for splashes of colour. The limestone wall behind provided a simple and undistracting backdrop. The roof tiles on the wall and green plants in the frame both formed leading lines towards Bryony, so I left more space on the left of the image to put emphasis on her.
