The N-photo experts say…

here’s What you need to get shots as good as tom’s

-

take a moment

When visiting another country, especially one you’re not likely to go back to soon, take the time to set up your shot. Taking those extra five minutes to use a tripod, compose or use proper filtration will lift your work from a snap to a more refined photograph.

Wide zoom lenses

Primes are great because they’re often smaller and sharper, but when travelling a wide-angle zoom will allow you to recompose your shot without needing to move much. Handy when in a country with adverse weather or rough terrain.

do the unexpected

It pays to experiment; you might usually expect a wide-angle lens to be used in horizontal orientation for landscapes, but Tom’s vertical compositions help make his images stand out. It’s amazing how trying the opposite can change the feel of your photographs.

shooting handheld

When shooting handheld at narrow apertures, there’s the worry of camera movement blurring your image, so keep an eye on shutter speed. Increasing the ISO by a stop or two will have a negligible effect on image quality and is far preferable to a shaky shot.
