an fx lens to Suit a tight budget
There are a number of similarities between this FX format lens and the DX format Nikon 35mm on test, as mentioned in the previous review. Despite this one needing to produce a larger image circle to cover a full-frame sensor, it has the same physical diameter and is only 2mm longer.
Added luxuries that are lacking in the DX lens include a focus distance scale, neatly positioned beneath a viewing window, and a weather-seal ring on the mounting plate. Both lenses are supplied with a hood and pouch. You can often get away without using the hood, as the front element is recessed deeply within the inner barrel.
Performance
Autofocus speed is a little pedestrian but image quality is very good overall. Despite having the same aperture rating as the DX lens, depth of field is a bit tighter, thanks to the 50mm rather than 35mm focal length. When stopped down a little, both lenses turn defocused lights into noticeable heptagonal shapes, due to their sevenbladed diaphragms.
Sharpness
You need to stop down to f/2.8 for good sharpness outside the central region.
Fringing
Colour fringing is more minimal than from the Nikon 35mm DX format lens.
Distortion
Less barrel distortion than from most other lenses on test, including the Zeiss.
