Project patterns
Jason Parnell-brookes shows you how to make light patterns in your photographs with simple objects that can be found around the house
How to use a simple ‘gobo’ to cast shadowy patterns on portraits
There are dedicated shapes called gobos (go between object) that are specifically designed to fit on your flashgun, and there are a plethora of designs out there, but you needn’t fork out cash for a pretty pattern. You can use many objects you may have around the house, like our crocheted blanket, for example.
The trick to using any kind of modifier to create patterns like this is to keep it close to your subject. Hard light, from small, undiffused light sources, will produce the best results.
If you’re shooting with window light, or doing this project outside, you’ll need to make sure you do this on a clear day with direct sunlight because otherwise the clouds will soften the light, making the patterns indecipherable. However, for full control over the light and for a fun indoors project, grab a torch or a flashgun, and set your blanket up to make portraits with a patterned punch.
