Make light of it / Create your own light source and gobo

Any light bright enough to cast shadows through your gobo will work, so instead of a flashgun you could try a powerful torch or desk lamp. For your gobo, anything that has punched-out holes to form patterns will work, such as a cardboard template with holes cut into it, or more natural objects, such as fern leaves.
