NEF files take up a lot more space than JPEGS, and they come in a few different types

We’ve chosen a selection of Nikon DSLRS as examples. 12-bit NEF files are smaller than 14-bit versions, but offer lower quality (you may not notice the difference.) Both 12-bit and 14-bit NEF files can be saved at up to three different compression settings (depending on the model).
