Your recent Apprentice on shooting birds of prey, in N-photo 87, was perfectly timed for my own trip to the Isle of Mull in September. In between rain showers I managed to get out on a small ‘eagle-watching boat’ (similar to that mentioned by your expert Chris Gomersall), and with nine others waited for the white-tailed main event to arrive. After checking that my camera settings were working on the seagulls following the boat, an eagle arrived!

As you have recently mentioned the Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD, I thought I would share some of the shots I managed with it on my D4. We only saw one eagle up close during the three-hour trip, and I was delighted to report that the Tamron had no issues focusing; the D4 was set to AF-C as your expert advised! Also on page 59, Mr Gomersall mentions to ‘keep an eye out’, and this was certainly true driving around Mull… We managed to pull over and park off the road to capture some herons, which was an unexpected pleasure. thanks for sharing your shots, and we’re pleased you found our Apprentice feature so useful. while only one reader can be the Apprentice each issue, our hope is that many others can learn through their eyes, as you have certainly done! to apply to be an Apprentice, see the end of the article on page 62.
