Be an everyday shooter

Perhaps the most useful way to evolve and grow as a photographer is to actively engage in the act of taking photos all the time. It really is a case of practise, practise and practise. Get into the habit of taking pictures every day. If you can carry your Nikon with you everywhere, then do it, if not use a smartphone. You don’t need to lug around your entire kit, just one lens will do, try a 50 or 35mm. In fact, strive to use just one focal length for a year, it’ll make you a better photographer. Guaranteed!
