See the light

-

When shooting close-ups of flowers, it is easy to manipulate and enhance lighting. Direct sunlight can be harsh and create ugly hotspots on reflective petals or leaves. Look for subjects in shade, where the light is more even, or try using a small pop-out diffuser to soften the light. A 30cm or 45cm version will do. Place the disc nearby and angle it so you bounce natural light onto your subject to add illumination, or relieve distracting shadows. The effect can be subtle or pronounced – alter the light’s intensity by moving the reflector closer or further away. Lastolite are among the brands that produce collapsible diffusers and reflectors.

It is also worthwhile keeping a small LED light in your backpack

– a continuous light source can be useful for creative lighting.
