Autofocus modes
Select the right Autofocus mode for the subject you’re shooting
Single-area (AF-S)
Single-area AF is used when focusing on static subjects. The camera focuses once on a subject a set distance from the camera, and will not refocus automatically if you or your subject moves. The focus point will briefly flash green to confirm focus lock.
Auto (AF-A)
Switches between AF-S and AF-C modes, depending on the subject under the active focus point(s). If the camera thinks that the subject is static, it switches to AF-S, and if the subject moves, it changes to AF-C. High-end cameras do not have this mode.
Continuous (AF-C)
Continuous AF is used to track moving subjects. When halfpressing the shutter (or AF-ON), it continually focuses on the subject under the active focus point(s), automatically adjusting to keep your subject in focus. The focus point stays red as the system is continually focusing.
Full-time (AF-F)
Full-time AF is used for autofocus when shooting video. This mode automatically tracks subject movement and constantly focuses during video recording. Use it in conjunction with Face/eye tracking on Z-series cameras for perfectly focused footage of subjects.
