Third-party prime and zooms

If you’re shooting with a DX format DSLR, choices of wide-angle lenses with a ‘fast’ aperture rating are very limited. Indeed, Nikon doesn’t make any wide-angle DX format prime lenses. The AF-S DX 35mm f/1.8g comes closest but has an ‘effective’ focal length of 52.5mm after applying the 1.5x crop factor, giving a more standard viewing angle. Nikon also doesn’t make a DX wide-angle zoom lens with a faster aperture rating than f/3.5-4.5, which is a bit on the slow side for shooting stars. If you’re after a suitable prime lens, we’d suggest the DX format Samyang 10mm f/2.8 ED AS NCS CS (£379/$499). For a zoom, go for the Tokina atx-i 11-16mm f/2.8 CF (£419/$449) or the Tokina atx-i 11-20mm f/2.8 CF (£529/$529), the latter giving a larger overall zoom range.
