WHERE EAGLES DARE?
THE PHOTO ABOVE IS ONE OF EINAR AND GYDA’S FAVOURITE IMAGES OF A SEA EAGLE LANDING AT ITS NEST…
Amazing photo. How hard was it?
These are some of the most difficult photographs to capture. Iceland only has 80 pairs of sea eagles, they are heavily protected and our images are the result of sitting in a hide, 50 metres from a nesting site, for many days and weeks. Sometimes we spend 14 hours a day in a tiny tent without a break, with never more than three chances to get the landing. Most days the light and the direction of the landing doesn’t work.
Photographing them requires a permit from the Environment Agency of Iceland. Only a handful of lucky photographers manage to get these permits every year under strict rules. So, we are not used to hand-fed sea eagles like they have in Norway! That’s one reason why these photographs are so special to us and they have received great attention here in Iceland.
