Master off-camera Speedlights

-

Taking your flashgun off-camera opens up a huge range of creative lighting opportunities that you can you use anywhere, on any subject and at any time of day. A single off-camera flash gives you much more control over the quality and direction of light and, used correctly, can add much more depth to your images.

As you gain experience, you can move on to using multiple off-camera Speedlights, firing them at different power settings, to create really amazing light. Off-camera flash is not as complex as you might think, and Nikon has a range of flash technologies that have been developed over many years to make it easy to shoot off-camera flash images whether you have a DSLR or Z-series camera. You can use off-camera flash in all genres of photography, but it’s especially good for fashion, portraits and even wedding photography.

To get started with off-camera flash all you need is a flash trigger and a compatible Speedlight that can be used in ‘remote’ mode. Depending on which Nikon camera you have, there are a number of options for triggering the remote off-camera flashgun. One of the easiest ways to start shooting with off-camera Speedlights is to use an extension cord, such as the Nikon SC-29 TTL. Attach one end of the cable to the hotshoe on the camera and then the other to the base of your Speedlight; you’ve now taken the first steps towards using off-camera flash. This is a very simple and effective technique, especially if you support the camera with a tripod and, with your spare hand, you can now move and position the flash to use the light to best

Some Speedlights have a ‘Commander’ (CMD) mode that allows them to act as a line-ofsight flash trigger. Slot the Speedlight into the hotshoe, now in the CMD control menu you have options to set Groups, Channels, flash mode and output power to control remote flashes.
