Faces are everything. I was at a street festival when I noticed this woman with a slush drink. I talked to her, took some photos, talked some more, took more photos… I used a Gary Fong Lightsphere at the quickest flash setting to bring out skin tones and capture a spark in the eyes.

The way Amy looks at the camera was a result of either tiring of me or becoming at ease. I used an ultra-wide lens and a longer exposure, so I asked her to stay still. An LED battery light turned on at the last minute to add some pop to the left side of the frame.

THE WAVE

I’ve covered activism for years, but protestors sending the statue of Colston into Bristol Harbour was the moment I wanted – based on the print by Hokusai. The image has been used in schools and arts spaces to learn from the moment.
