‘NOTHING ALIVE’

-

AFTER THE FLAMES WERE EXTINGUISHED, IT WAS A ‘BLACK WALK’ IN THE SMOULDERING FORESTS THAT BROUGHT HOME THE IMPACT OF AUSTRALIA’S CLIMATE FIRES…

Why are they called ‘black walks’?

The rescue teams call them black walks because it was. Everything was black and incinerated, yet you’d come across bowls of food that people were leaving out, but there was nothing alive. I was digging up the ground and there weren’t even ants. It had incinerated everything, three billion animals and counting. It’s akin to a meteor strike or something like that. Everybody talks about climate change but you never really see it. It’s just an idea to most people, but this was real for everybody in Australia. It was scary to think that this is a glimpse of what our future might be if we don’t get our shit together.
