Vertical pan

-

Critically panned

Great for trees or tall plants, you simply move the camera up during the exposure to follow the lines of the trunks or stems. Experiment with your exposure times, but the quicker the shutter speed the faster you’ll need to move the camera. The trick is to minimize any side-to-side movement, which will result in wonky lines. If shooting handheld, brace the camera strap around your neck and start moving the camera

before you hit the shutter, continuing to move it until after the shutter has closed. A tripod with a three-way head enables you to lock off all movement aside from the vertical plane.
