Ihave read a number of articles similar to ‘Balancing Act’ in the Nikon Skills section of the Summer 2021 issue (N-photo 127) and they don’t seem to use the camera’s self-timer to its full extent, as available on cameras like the Nikon D850 and Z 7.

I have been using exposure bracketing for many years now and it has invariably been successful and rewarding. I generally do not use a tripod and so the shutter speed must be high enough for handheld shooting. Like your article, I generally use a bracketing sequence of three shots 1EV apart.

Now, here is the bit

I would like to see expanded on. The self-timer setup allows you to set the delay, normally two seconds is more than adequate, but also the number of shots to take. So set this to the same number as your bracketing sequence, three in this case. Now, when you press the shutter, the camera will go into a set time delay, allowing you to get steady, and then the camera will take all the required bracketing shots without further intervention. Despite handholding when I shoot the individual images for HDR, I have no problems with photograph alignment. Kerry Turner

Great tip, Kerry! And as your shot shows, it yields fantastic results.
