Lens coatings
How specialist coatings on lenses help improve your images
Nano Crystal Coat
Designed to eliminate internal lens reflections and reduce ghosting and flare caused by light entering the lens diagonally. Using nanometre-sized particles applied to the lens surface, these coatings retain contrast and sharpness in the image and help avoid ‘washed out’ images. They can be found in higher-class F-mount lenses and Z-mount S-line lenses.
ARNEO
An anti-reflective coating that works together with Nano Crystal Coat to further reduce ghosting and flare caused by stray light entering the lens vertically. This allows you to shoot clear and crisp images with minimal ghosting and flare, even when a light source is located within the frame, such as shooting directly into the sun.
Fluorine
This protective coating effectively repels water droplets, dust, dirt or grease, and ensures easy removal in the event that they do stick to the lens surface. A Fluorine coating can also withstand a higher frequency of lens surface cleaning. Its anti-reflective properties also contribute to the capture of clear images.
ED glass
Extra-low Dispersion glass is a specialist glass that is better at controlling the entire spectrum of colour, nearly eliminating the risk of chromatic aberrations that can occur when using normal glass. This can be a particular issue for longer focal length lenses, which is why ED glass can be found in a wide range of Nikon telephoto lenses.
