Nikon Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S
£999/$997 One macro lens to rule them all
This is Nikon’s 105mm macro lens reinvented for mirrorless cameras. A more high-tech affair, handling extras include a customizable control ring and lens-function button, as well as a multi-function OLED display. As such, it inherits all the trappings of Nikon’s legendary top-end S-line lenses. Unlike the Z MC 50mm lens on test, focusing is fully internal and the working distance at the shortest focus setting is boosted from 5cm to a much more convenient 15cm.
Another bonus over the Z MC 50mm is that the 105mm adds optical VR. Driven by voice-coils, it’s rated at 4.5 stops compared with the 3 stops of the older F-mount 105mm lens, and overall effectiveness is further boosted by Z-series cameras that have in-body stabilization.
Performance
The lens puts its mighty feature list and handling prowess to good use, delivering stellar performance in all respects. Autofocus is super-fast and deadly accurate, while manual focusing is ultra-precise. Image quality is simply spectacular.
N-photo verdict
For macro shooting, there’s nothing to touch this lens for quality, handling and all-round performance.
