Lens of choice 50mm f/1.8 prime

Capturing speedy subjects in barely lit spaces is a challenge, and if you’re still using a kit lens designed for focal flexibility and not light gathering, it can seem almost impossible. The first lens many aspiring music photographers pick up, and arguably the best value, is the classic nifty fifty! With F-mount options regularly costing less than £200 new, or £100 second-hand, the superwide aperture it provides can prove priceless, while offering a focal length well suited to frame-filling portraits of artists. Even when shooting larger venues, it’ll remain a kitbag essential as a fallback option for the most challenging lighting situations.
