STEAMTRAINS

-

GERRY POWELL, N-PHOTO #30

“We had got to the Severn Valley Railway at dawn, hoping for great light, but things didn’t quite work out for us. By the time the weather started to improve I had had the chance to practise some of the things pro Phil Jones had been teaching me, so was all set for this shot of the Ivatt Class 4 loco, affectionately known as The Flying Pig. Winter is the best time to photograph steam trains as you get more steam in the cold weather, but Phil explained that as the sun remains low in the sky, it is also better as you can get light on the side of the carriages and locomotive for longer. In summer, he says, you can only get shots for the first and last hour of the day… and most preserved railways are not operating at these times!”
